Celebrating Romanian language and affirming Romanian American heritage

The Day of Romanian Language, “Ziua Limbii Române” is officially celebrated in Romania and simultaneously as “Limba Noastră” in the Republic of Moldova on August 31st. This year, we invite you to celebrate Romanian language and our heritage through a virtual screening of a documentary on Romanian migration to the United States at the turn of the last century. We are also elated to sponsor a contest for Romanian-American diaspora children (ages 6-14) spearheaded by the American Romanian Cultural Society in Seattle with the support of other community based partnering organizations in various diaspora hubs throughout United States. We ask that you distribute widely the information about this children’s contest so that as many children as possible participate in this effort to engender a sense of belonging to a wider diaspora community throughout the continent. The deadline for children to submit applications (via contact@arcsproject.org) is noon, August 30th.

The online screening and panel discussion of “A Thousand Dollars and Back”, an Emmy nominated documentary on the turn of the last century Romanian immigration to the United States will take place on August 30 at 6:00 p.m. CT, 7:00 p.m. ET. This impressive effort to collect the testimonies of Romanian descendants who settled in Minnesota and to preserve their stories is a truly inspiring project, one that we featured this year as a selected Diaspora Project of Excellence during the Second Conference of Romanian American Professionals in June. We are honored to highlight the work of the Heritage Organization of Romanian Americans In Minnesota (HORA) who in collaboration with the Romanian Genealogy Society secured the funding from the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund (“Legacy Grants”) to produce this film.

We hope this screening will inspire similar collaborative efforts across the United States and that it fosters the sharing of expertise in the implementation of such commendable work. The event is FREE, however we highly encourage you to consider a donation to HORA in support of their continued local efforts and work in promoting Romanian American identity and our valuable heritage as part of our host nation’s rich cultural diversity.
